HOMESTEAD, Florida – The opening laps of the 2016 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour season were made Friday, with practice and qualifying sessions were held for Round One of the Southeast Conference Championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
More than 250 entries descended on the 2.3-mile circuit for 25 minutes of practice prior to lunch, followed by 20-minute qualifying sessions in the afternoon.
Forty-six Spec Miatas turned qualifying times with both Sellin M. Rollan and Danny Steyn topping the time sheets with identical 1:39.029 (83.612 mph) laps. SCCA tiebreakers go to the second-fastest lap, which means Steyn has the provisional pole.
Defending Spec Racer Ford 3 National Champion Kerry Jacobsen, of Deland, Florida, was fastest in that class, which made its first official appearance on a spec Hoosier Tire. Jacobsen’s lap of 1:31.158 (90.831 mph) was more than a second better than his pole time in 2015.
