“Where are the results?” It’s a question you’ll hear frequently at any Sports Car Club of America® event. At Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, site of this weekend’s Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour, the man to see about results is Duane Ward, a longtime member of the Ohio Valley Region.
Ward’s work “station” is located at the bottom of the iconic tower located in Mid-Ohio’s paddock. There, he serves an administrative need overseeing Driver Information services. As practice, qualifying or race results become available, Ward prints out copies -- lots of copies -- and makes them available to anyone interested.
“This is the second part of Timing and Scoring,” Ward noted. “I present the printed results to drivers. It’s a clerical task that is the finalization of the scoring process. Plus, we’ll try to give crew information if something has happened out on course.”
But Ward is more than just master of the Mid-Ohio copy machine. He is also a competitor. Back in high school, Ward did some drag racing and was a motorsport fan. A friend brought him out to Mid-Ohio to watch some professional road racing events and the hook was set. He started working as a crewman for some drivers, and became a driver himself competing in Improved Touring classes now for the last 15 years.
“Do you want to be out on track or do you want to help put on an event? There’s so many different things to do within the SCCA,” Ward said about the Club. “It’s a hobby, a great getaway.”
If you’re at Mid-Ohio this weekend and need a physical copy of results, be sure to look for Ward at the base of the tower. If you’re not at the track to witness this weekend’s Hoosier Super Tour, well, you can find digital results online. Live timing & scoring, lap notes, live video, and Super Tour Radio presented by Hoosier Racing Tire can also be found online at www.scca.com/live.
