Storylines/Things to Watch:
Massive Fields -- Nearly 350 entries are anticipated at this weekend’s Hoosier Super Tour WeatherTech Chicago Region® June Sprints® at Road America. No surprise, Spec Miata and Spec Racer Ford Gen3 competitors make up a good chunk of those entries with both classes sporting right around 55 racers apiece. Super Touring® Lite rings in with 17 challengers, followed by the GT-2 class with a field of 16 cars. The GT-1 and Prototype 1 classes each have 15 entries, and the Touring 2 and Formula F classes follow with 14 racers each. Also keep a watch on E Production with 13 competitors, and Formula Enterprises 2 with a dozen drivers fighting for wins over two days of racing.
Massive Support -- The largest field by far this weekend, sporting a lot of class, is made up of more than 200 volunteers who will be on hand to help pull off what is a massive weekend of racing at Road America. Sports Car Club of America® is a membership organization and, as such, utilizes volunteers to put on events. These people organize, register, score, officiate and work flag stations during race weekends. None of SCCA’s more than 2,000 events annually are possible without the help of the Club’s selfless volunteers.
GT-3 Challenge Weekend -- Keep a close watch Saturday and Sunday on the June Sprints GT-3 races as they are part of this year’s GT-3 Challenge presented by MPI, a series supported by Mazda, Max Papis Innovations, Penske Racing Shocks, AiM Sports and Hoosier Racing Tire. The GT-3 Challenge consists of five events held around the country, culminating with October’s SCCA National Championship Runoffs®.
The Grand Marshal -- Each year, SCCA’s Chicago Region picks a motorsport celebrity to serve as Grand Marshal at the June Sprints. The past couple years have seen SCCA Hall of Fame inductees Bobby Rahal and Peter Cunningham fill that role. In 2019, the Grand Marshal is Greg Creamer who has served as the broadcast voice of the National Championship Runoffs® for several years, and is no stranger to Road America as he has been the PA announcer at the venue on more than one occasion.
Come Watch the Racing -- The weather forecast for Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin this weekend shows mostly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 60s and perhaps some rain on Saturday. But no matter the conditions, it’s always a good weekend to get out and enjoy some racing at America’s National Park of Speed. Spectators are welcome with three-day tickets being $70 per person. Friday-only passes are $25, and single-day passes for either Saturday or Sunday are $35 apiece. Anyone 16-years-old and under are always free with a paying adult at the gate.
